FAMMPR Officially Affiliates with GAMMA International

Puerto Rico's national MMA federation has transitioned from IMMAF to GAMMA International, a move that unifies our national team and opens new doors for athletes at every level.

The Federación de Artes Marciales Mixtas de Puerto Rico (FAMMPR) is proud to announce its official affiliation with GAMMA International — the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts — effective immediately.

This transition marks a historic step forward for Puerto Rican MMA and reflects our federation's commitment to providing the best possible path for our athletes, from youth competitors to elite-level fighters.

Why We Made the Switch

For years, FAMMPR operated under IMMAF. While that affiliation provided a foundation, it came with a structural limitation that directly affected our athletes and families: youth and adult competitors were required to travel to separate international tournaments.

That meant two separate delegations, two sets of travel costs, and — most importantly — two experiences that should have been one.

Under GAMMA, that changes.

One Team. One Trip. One Mission.

GAMMA International allows Puerto Rico to field a unified national team — youth and adult athletes traveling together to compete under the same flag, at the same event.

This is not a small logistical detail. This is transformational for athlete development.

When a 16-year-old fighter trains and travels alongside our senior competitors, they absorb something that no practice session can teach: the focus, discipline, and mental fortitude of what it takes to perform on an international stage. They see what the path looks like. They live it.

"This change is about more than competition. It's about building a culture — one where every Puerto Rican fighter, regardless of age, knows they belong on the international stage."

Our youth athletes are no longer a separate program. They are Team Puerto Rico.

MMA Striking — A New Frontier

GAMMA also brings with it an exciting new discipline: MMA Striking.

This emerging ruleset — a specialized competitive format within MMA — adds a dynamic dimension to international competition. Puerto Rico's athletes will have the opportunity to compete in MMA Striking on the world stage, positioning our fighters at the cutting edge of the sport's evolution.

We believe this is the future of MMA competition, and FAMMPR intends to be at the forefront of it.

GAMMA's International Legitimacy

GAMMA International is recognized as a leading global governing body for mixed martial arts, with representation across multiple continents and a growing championship circuit.

Most significantly, GAMMA hosts the Pan American Championships — one of the most prestigious regional competitions in the sport. The 2026 edition will be held in Bogotá, Colombia, and Team Puerto Rico will be there.

This is not a qualifying event. This is our national team representing the island against the best athletes in the Americas.

What This Means for Athletes & Gyms

For athletes registered under FAMMPR, the transition to GAMMA means:

  • Access to GAMMA's international ranking and licensing system
  • Eligibility to compete at GAMMA Pan American and World Championships
  • Competing alongside — not separately from — Puerto Rico's full national team
  • Opportunity to compete in MMA Striking as the discipline grows

For coaches and affiliated gyms, we will be communicating directly with updated registration and competition guidelines in the coming weeks.
